Summer salad

This is a very common salad prepared all across India, across different cultures with some variations. It is an ideal accompaniment for Pav Bhaji without the cucumber.

Ingredients (4-6 servings)

1 cucumber, peeled, diced

1/2 red onion, diced*

1 tomato, diced

Cilantro, chopped

½ tsp lemon

Salt as needed

Crushed black pepper as needed

* 1/2 red onion in US = 1 red onion in India


  1. Transfer all the sliced vegetables into a salad bowl and mix in the chopped coriander leaves.
  2. Sprinkle salt, crushed black pepper and lemon juice and mix well. Add these ingredients just before serving otherwise the vegetables will lose their water content and salad will become watery.


You can cut the vegetables in the shape you like – thin or thick round slices or longitudinal slices or even dice them into small pieces.

Without the cucumber you can also use this salad as a topping for masala papad. Instead of ground black pepper, use red chili powder.
